Super Hero Spry Marigold
Super Hero Spry marigold was named a national winner by All America Selections for 2018. This is by far one of the most beautiful marigolds I’ve seen recently.
The Super Hero seed mix includes blooms in eight different colors, such as yellows, deep reds, and oranges as well as bicolors.
The Super Heroes are varieties of the French marigold (Tagetes patula). All of the Super Hero plants are bushy, compact, and uniform. They can reach a foot in height. The well branched plants are very early blooming. These beauties can withstand high temperatures and bloom throughout the summer into fall. The lovely crested blooms are two inches across.
Bred by Benary, the Super Heroes are ideal for mixed borders and containers.
I love Spry in particular because of the beautiful combination of colors and the perfect shape of the flowers. The contrast between the deep maroon lower petals and the vivid golden yellow upper ones is a vision of beauty.
Super Hero Spry was chosen as an AAS winner because it was early flowering, and the color pattern remained stable in all the plants, as well as the fact that it requires no deadheading.
French marigolds are among the most popular types of marigolds. These are ideal for growing as companion plants to deter insect pests.
All marigolds are easy to grow from seed. Generally, gardeners prefer to start them early indoors in order to get earlier blooms. Seeds will sprout in about three to five days. Cover these seeds to a depth of 1/8 inch.
Plant indoors around four to six weeks before the last expected frost date in your area. Planting too early indoors can often result in leggy plants that don’t bloom as well.
Super Hero Spry marigolds begin blooming about ten weeks from planting time.
All marigolds need full sun. They do best in an average to rich soil. They will tolerate a slightly drier soil than some annuals. These annuals are very suitable for novice gardeners as they are so easy to grow. Space them about a foot or so apart, depending on the variety being grown.
Marigolds of all sorts are suitable for cutting. However, the Super Hero stems won’t be as long as the other taller types of marigolds, such as the African marigolds.

According to an article in one of my hort magazines, this was chosen in honor of Fritz Benary. During World War II the family’s seed business in Germany was destroyed. After the war was over, Fritz rode around the country on his bicycle gathering seeds to restart the company. At the California Pack Trials in the spring of 2018 when the plants were first introduced, the company displayed a pot of Super Hero Spry marigolds in full bloom displayed in the basket of a bicycle.
